Khoo Swee Chiow's 5th 8000-er

Congratulations to Swee Chiow on bagging his 5th 8,000-meter peak. He and his partner, Minma Sherpa reached the summit of Makalu (8,481 masl) a couple of weeks ago. From their photo, it looked like it was a great day to climb.

Nearing 50, he's not showing any signs of slowing down, and is on track to becoming the first Southeast Asian to reach all 14 8000-ers. His next destination appears to be Manaslu, the eighth highest mountain in the world (8,156masl)

I was introduced to Swee Chiow many years ago by Garduch, when he asked me to help arrange Swee Chiow's climbs here in the Philippines. We have kept in touch ever since; making sure to catch up with him when he drops into town. He has been a constant supporter of my Himalayan dreams; tirelessly inviting me to his upcoming expeditions (his motto, after all, is "dare to dream").

It's nice to see the success of Swee Chiow in the mountains. That's a life that I won't hesitate to live. Along with Garduch, they are examples of how you can achieve your goals through hard work and focus.
